In a disappointing turn of events, Rishabh Pant, India's vice-captain, found himself sidelined once again during the Test match due to an injury. The incident occurred in the 68th over when he was struck on the right foot while attempting a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes. The delivery hit the outer part of his boot, causing him significant discomfort. Following an LBW appeal from England and a DRS review, it was confirmed that Pant had edged the ball.
Before the third umpire could make a decision, Pant was visibly in distress. He removed his gloves and limped around the crease, prompting immediate attention from the medical staff. During the drinks break, the team examined his foot, removing his boot, sock, and pads, revealing swelling and a small cut. Unable to bear weight on his foot, Pant was transported off the field in a buggy, and a substitute batter took his place.
Update on Pant's Condition
Sai Sudharsan provided an update on Pant's condition, stating, "He was definitely in a lot of pain, but they have taken him for scans. We should have more information by tomorrow." He emphasized the impact of Pant's potential absence, noting, "It would be a significant loss as he was performing well today. We will miss a key batter if he cannot return. However, we have other players ready to step up and will aim to adapt to this situation effectively."
Impact of Pant's Injury on the Team
This injury adds to India's growing list of fitness concerns. Earlier this week, pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh were ruled out due to injuries, leading to the debut of Anshul Kamboj. Notably, Pant had just returned from a finger injury sustained during the Lord's Test, which had previously kept him from donning the wicketkeeping gloves.
